Hi there!

I'm Byron, and welcome to my website! I'm a 5th year @ UBC studying Computer Science and Microbiology & Immunology. If you spot me outside class, you’ll likely see me in a meeting (currently a member of nwPlus), bowling, or sipping a coffee.

I'll be using this website as a random canvas for life updates, projects, and any random thoughts so feel free to poke around!

• Developed interactive dashboards using TypeScript React to optimize part management and recycling workflows within the factory's operations

• Initiated the introduction of React into the Angular codebase, building essential components to accelerate the transition to a modern frontend architecture

• Development lead of Stupaid, a startup connecting small businesses with students who want to get their foot into the door

• Implemented a full-stack application with a responsive UI using JavaScript React for the frontend and Express for the backend, enabling real-time chat with Socket.io

• Integrated Firebase for user authentication and data storage, conditionally rendering user data on the frontend based on queries

📍 Vancouver, BC, May 2023 - Dec 2023

• Contributed to the implementation of core features for m2.paybyphone.com by enhancing the website`s user interface and working with serverside endpoints to elevate functionality

• Spearheaded the migration of our CI/CD system from TeamCity to GitLab CI/CD, resulting in improved efficiency

• Implemented a flexible Docker image by introducing support for multiple Node.js versions to accommodate diverse project requirements

• Developed reusable and accessible UI components for xodo.com using TypeScript React and maintained code with production of end to end tests

📍 Vancouver, BC, Sept 2020 - Dec 2021

• Provided assistance to 600+ non-computer science students to help them understand computational concepts

• Led weekly lab sessions for over 90 students, completing over 36 labs over the course of the term and prepared recorded video solutions to lab problems for success of future TAs and students

• Hosted 10 office hours and a group review session before exams assisting 35+ students

• An AR application using Snap's Lens Studio and their Spectacles, designed to assist doctors during consultations by providing real-time diagnoses, scribing, and suggested follow-up questions directly in their field of view

• A VR application that helps individuals study for exams using a Feynman technique

• A user uploads their class notes to our frontend, which trains our RAG model using this information

• From there, the user puts on the VR headset and is asked questions by our mascots, designed to cover all the main learning objectives

• Awarded 1st place in the AI stream + 3rd place overall

📍 Oct 2023, DubHacks 2023

• Created a language learning tool that mocks any real world scenario, capable of hearing and responding with over 6 languages

• Utilized OpenAI's whisper API to convert text-to-speech, which is processed by GPT-3.5-turbo. The response is then fed to Google API's text-to-speech sythesis, which is read out to the user

• Awarded best use of Google Cloud award

• Utilized GPT-3.5 to generate recipes given a user's available ingredients to target student food insecurity

• Created a forum page for students to share and be notified of extra food being handed out using firebase firestore

• Awarded runner up for food sustainability prize
